Winter vacationing in Milwaukee. Yup. That’s right. I packed my Crown Vic with four Torontonians and drove to Milwaukee, WI in the dead of winter. Home of Harley-Davidson, Milwaukee hosts Mama Tried, an annual bike show in its third year and our main reason to trek somewhere colder than Toronto in February.
Mama Tried is an invitational, where builders are handpicked to showcase their work and also to shine an added spotlight on bikes from the Midwest. Over 50 motorcycles “from builders of all calibers—flat-tracker, hill climber, chopper, and bar hopper," were at this year's show.
So we drove 12+ hours to Milwaukee in the middle of winter for a vacation. Mama Tried was a 3-day whirlwind of watching indoor flat track races and crashes on a Dr Pepper soda syrup cement surface to cheap American beer soaked floors in the back of a dive bar with at a Trap party. The notable cheap American beers are PBR and Miller Lite or GD, all hailing from Milwaukee, or any beer ending in "z" -- Schlitz, Blitz, etc.
Mama Tried is something everyone should experience.
